Trial Lawyers College

FAQs

What trial skills are taught at Trial Lawyers College courses?

Trial Lawyers College provides specific training on Discovering the Story, Jury Selection, Opening Statement, Direct Examination, Cross examination, and Closing Argument using psychodramatic tools. Each course will cover one or more of these trial skills. Only the 3 Week College covers all the skills.

Is TLC training for new attorneys?

Trial Lawyers College provides advanced trial skill training. Lawyers who have a well-established understanding of rules of evidence, courtroom norms and trial experience will gain much more benefit from this training.

What is the TLC financial assistance policy?

Similar to some grant processes, applicants for financial assistance must provide employment status and employer name for previous 12 months; city and state (or region) in which they practice; average monthly income (from all sources) over the past 12 months; a statement of why assistance is needed; and how much assistance is needed. Applications will be reviewed 40 days prior to the course’s start date so assistance may be provided in sufficient time to allow travel plans and for the College to manage registrations within the course’s venue contractual obligations. There may be occasions where last-minute approval of financial assistance becomes available. Those will be addressed in as timely a fashion as possible.

What is the TLC cancellation policy?

Given the high cost of providing courses at easily accessible venues nationwide and those venues’ strict cancellation policies, TLC has had to make changes to its cancellation policy. To lessen the impact of this change in policy on our tribe, we offer the following options: 1. In the case where a student needs to cancel, they have 31 days prior to the course to cancel and receive a full refund. If the student cancels after the 31-day deadline, to receive a full refund they may contact TLCfinance@triallawyerscollege.org with the name of a replacement student who is prepared to take their place. This is especially important to cover the cost of the committed lodging. After the replacement student completes registration including full payment, a full refund will be processed. 2. If the student does not find a replacement for their reserved spot prior to the program, TLC will apply 50% of the paid tuition as a credit towards a future program, to be used within one year. TLC will apply the other 50% towards the unused lodging expense of the course canceled. If you have any questions, please contact TLCfinance@triallawyerscollege.org.

How do I obtain my CLE reporting information?

The CLE application is submitted to the state the course is held in as well as the attendance for those licensed within the state. Shortly after the conclusion of each course attendees will receive an email with information to submit to their states for CLE credit. If self-reporting is not allowed, TLC will submit the required documents and attendance records.

How do I register for a course?

To register for a course, you may either find the course of your choice by using the website course calendar, or find the course on the home page menu bar. Both provide access to register, once you login with your user account or create a user account.

Am I required to share a bedroom with another attendee?

Some courses include the expense of a shared guest room in the tuition price. If the venue has enough guest rooms, we may offer a single guest room at a separate price from the standard tuition.

What is the 7 Step Program?

The Trial Lawyers College is proud of its unique training, all of which is based upon psychodrama. TLC is also proud of its uniqueness from other lawyer courses, in that those who have graduated from the college join a Warrior family of alumni. We understand that some lawyers cannot step away from home and their practice for 3 weeks to attend the College. Knowing this, TLC offers the ability for a trial lawyer for the people to graduate through a 7-step program.

What is psychodrama?

Psychodrama has been defined as the search for truth in dramatic action. Unless one knows something of oneself, it is impossible to know much about the jurors, the judge, and the witnesses. Using the principles and tools of psychodrama, TLC teaches group formation and group action, the importance of role reversal, and unique psychodrama-based trial skills. Trial lawyers work in small groups directed by at least one licensed psychodramatist to learn about each other and themselves in order to become more aware of our differences and similarities. All of TLC’s psychodramatists are licensed and insured mental health practitioners who are certified by the American Board of Examiners in Psychodrama, Sociometry and Group Psychotherapy as Certified Practitioners.

May I bring my family to the course?

Not really. TLC courses are confidential and intensive, typically going from 9am to 9pm. TLC courses are not your typical lecture course. You will be on your feet, working on real cases in small group settings. Being present for yourself and the group provides the best benefit of TLC training. Time for family will be very limited and will likely distract from getting the full benefit of the course training.

What is included in the course tuition price?

Tuition always includes the training sessions and certain (listed) meals on the agenda. Tuition for some courses include guest rooms as either a shared room or private room. Please read carefully the details for each course, as not every course includes lodging in the tuition price. If lodging is not included, TLC will offer a group rate guest room for the venue.
